How a calcite filter raises pH on an acidic supply

A calcite filter is a backwashing tank filled with crushed calcium carbonate. Acidic water passing through the bed dissolves a small amount of the media, which raises the pH and stops the water from corroding your copper pipes and fittings. The mechanism, and why the media disappears

Calcite is calcium carbonate, and acidic water dissolves it. That is not a side effect, it is the entire working principle: the acid is neutralized by consuming the media, so the bed gets shorter over time and eventually stops correcting. Topping the tank up is normal maintenance rather than a repair, and how often you do it depends on how acidic the water is and how much you use. This is the single most misunderstood thing about calcite tanks. It adds hardness, by design

What dissolves into the water is calcium. On soft acidic well water the increase is often welcome, since the water was aggressive and mineral-poor to begin with. Blends, backwashing and sizing

Where calcite alone cannot raise the pH far enough, it is commonly blended with a magnesium oxide media, which corrects more strongly and adds magnesium as well as calcium. Blends need care, because over-correction is a real outcome. Sizing depends on contact time: water must spend long enough in the bed to dissolve what it needs, so a tank sized for a small household will under-correct in a busy one at peak flow. The control valve backwashes the bed periodically to break up the packing that forms as the media dissolves and to flush fines out, so the tank needs a drain and enough flow to lift the bed. Where it belongs in the train, and its limits

A neutralizer goes early, after sediment removal and ahead of iron, sulfur and softening equipment, because pH decides whether those later stages will work at all. Penn State Extension notes that a softener can remove dissolved iron only when pH is above 6.7, alongside hardness between 3 and 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron under 5 mg/L, so pH correction upstream is often what makes a softener viable on well water. As for limits: a calcite filter does nothing about bacteria, nitrate, hardness removal, iron, sulfur smell or taste. It corrects pH and protects the plumbing, and every other problem needs its own stage.
