Running a calcite neutralizer, and what it adds to the water

A calcite neutralizer is the simplest answer to acidic water: a backwashing vessel filled with calcium carbonate media that dissolves slowly into water with a low pH and raises it. There is no pump, no chemical to mix and nothing to dose. The two things owners need to understand are that the media is consumed, and that raising pH this way makes the water harder.

How it works and why the bed shrinks

Acidic water dissolves calcium carbonate. That is the entire mechanism: as water passes through the bed, a small amount of the media goes into solution, the water's pH rises and its calcium content rises with it. Because the media is being consumed rather than exhausted, the bed level drops over time and has to be topped up, typically once a year depending on how acidic the water is and how much the household uses. A vessel that has not been topped up in years is a vessel that has stopped correcting.

The hardness it adds

This is the trade and it is worth knowing before installing. Every unit of pH correction comes with dissolved calcium, so the treated water is harder than the raw water. On soft acidic water from a shallow well, which is the usual case, the increase is modest and often welcome, since very soft water is aggressive. Where the water is already hard, or where a softener sits downstream, the addition matters: the softener sees a heavier load and uses more salt. Soda ash injection avoids this by adding sodium instead.

Backwash, and why it is not optional

The vessel runs a backwash cycle on a control valve like any media filter, and it does two jobs here. It clears any sediment the bed has caught, and it prevents the media cementing into a solid mass, which calcite will do if left undisturbed as it dissolves. A neutralizer that is not backwashing properly develops channels: water finds a path through, contact time collapses, and pH correction falls away while the vessel looks fine from outside. The limits, and where it sits

Calcite can only raise pH so far, so strongly acidic water may not reach the target with calcite alone, and blends with a magnesium bearing media are used to lift it further at the cost of more hardness. Neutralization goes early in the train, ahead of iron and manganese treatment which are pH sensitive, and ahead of everything the corrosive water would otherwise attack.
