Calcite is a single purpose media that dissolves into acidic water to raise its pH, and its usefulness depends almost entirely on what else is in the treatment train. It interacts with other stages in ways that are easy to miss, and there are three common situations where fitting it produces a new problem rather than solving the original one.
What it interacts with
Everything downstream. Raising pH is what makes iron and especially manganese oxidation work, which is why neutralization goes early in the train and why an iron filter on acidic water may underperform until pH is corrected. It also adds hardness, which a softener downstream then has to remove, consuming more salt. And it changes how corrosive the water is to plumbing, which is the reason it was fitted. Nothing about calcite is isolated from the rest of the system.
Where it is the wrong stage: already hard water
If the water is acidic and already hard, calcite makes the hardness worse while correcting the pH, and a softener downstream carries the extra load. Soda ash injection raises pH by adding sodium instead, which avoids that entirely, and on hard acidic water it is usually the better choice despite the extra maintenance. This combination is less common than soft acidic water but it does occur, and specifying calcite by habit is how it gets missed.
Where it is the wrong stage: strongly acidic water
Calcite has a limited lift, so water at the strongly acidic end may not reach the target however large the vessel, and adding more media does not change the chemistry. Blended media with a magnesium bearing component raises the achievable pH further at the cost of more hardness, and soda ash injection reaches any practical target. Fitting calcite where it cannot reach the target produces a system that improves things slightly and never quite solves them.
Where it is the wrong stage: a supply that cannot backwash it
Calcite dissolves as it works and cements into a solid mass if the bed is not lifted regularly, so a vessel whose backwash flow the well cannot sustain will channel and quietly stop correcting. On a low yield well that is a real constraint and it argues for a smaller diameter vessel or for injection instead.
