Using soda ash for water treatment where calcite will not do

Soda ash is sodium carbonate, injected as a solution into a well line by a metering pump to raise pH. It is the alternative to a calcite neutralizing tank, and it is chosen for two specific reasons: it will lift a pH from as low as you need it to, and it adds no hardness to water that may already have plenty.

Why it is chosen over a tank

A calcite bed works by dissolving calcium carbonate into the water, which raises pH and raises hardness at the same time. On water that was already hard, that makes the scale problem worse and means a bigger softener afterwards. Soda ash raises pH by adding sodium carbonate instead, so hardness is unchanged. It also has no upper limit set by contact time, which means it handles very acidic water that calcite cannot lift within any practical tank size.

What the system consists of

A metering pump wired to the well pump or triggered by a flow switch, so solution is dosed only while water is moving. A solution tank kept made up to a consistent strength. An injection point with a check valve into the pressure line. And usually a contact or retention volume so mixing is complete before the water reaches the household or the next treatment stage. It needs power, and it needs somebody to make solution up periodically, which a passive tank does not.

Getting the dose right

There is no table for this. The dose depends on the water's alkalinity, its capacity to resist a pH change, as much as on its starting pH, so two wells reading identically can need very different amounts. The method is a bench titration on your own water: add a known strength solution to a measured sample in increments until the target is reached, then scale that to household flow. Aim slightly below neutral, since overshooting into alkaline water causes its own problems.

Living with it

Solution strength drops in storage, faster in warmth and light, so the delivered dose drifts down over the life of a tank and needs testing at an outlet rather than setting once. Mix to the same strength each time and keep the tank out of sunlight. The injection check valve scales and blocks, which is the most common failure and shows as a pump running with nothing delivered.
