There is no general answer to how much soda ash raises a given pH, and any table offering one is misleading. The dose depends on the water's buffering capacity as much as on its starting pH, and two wells reading the same pH can need very different amounts. That is why the correct method is a titration on your own water rather than a lookup.
Why pH alone does not give the dose
pH measures acidity intensity, not quantity. Alkalinity measures the water's capacity to resist a change in pH, and it is that resistance the soda ash has to overcome. A water with low alkalinity shifts a long way on a small dose and overshoots easily. A water with high alkalinity absorbs a much larger dose before moving at all. Two supplies reading identically on a pH meter can therefore need doses differing several fold, which is precisely why tables fail.
Doing the bench titration
Make up a solution of known strength, take a measured sample of the well water, and add the solution in small measured increments, stirring and reading the pH after each addition until the target is reached. Record the total added. That result scales directly to the volume the household uses, giving the dose rate the metering pump must deliver. Repeat the titration on a second sample to confirm, and repeat it seasonally, since well chemistry moves through the year.
Setting the pump to match
The metering pump is tied to the well pump or a flow switch so solution is injected only while water is moving, and its stroke and rate are adjusted to deliver the calculated rate at the household's actual flow. Set it low and work up, checking the pH at an outlet after each adjustment and allowing the system to settle between changes. Aim slightly below neutral rather than above, since overshooting into alkaline water causes its own problems and wastes solution.
Living with it
Solution strength drops in storage, faster in warmth and light, so the delivered dose drifts downward over the life of a tank and needs rechecking rather than being set once. Keep the tank out of sunlight, mix consistently to the same strength each time, and test the outlet after every refill.
