How much chlorine is needed to treat water, and what decides it

There is no single figure for how much chlorine water needs, and any source that gives one without conditions is describing a particular case. The requirement is set by what the water contains, how long the chlorine has to act, and what has to be left at the end. Understanding those three is what lets you follow guidance intelligently rather than guessing.

Demand, which the water sets

Chlorine is consumed by whatever it reacts with before it gets to do the job you wanted. Dissolved iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide all consume it. Organic material consumes it. Ammonia binds it. Sediment shields organisms and adds to the load. So two wells that need the same disinfection outcome can need very different doses, and a well with heavy iron may consume most of the chlorine oxidizing metals before any is available for disinfection, which is why iron treatment sometimes belongs first.

Contact time, which you design

Disinfection depends on concentration multiplied by the time the chlorine is in contact with the water, so a higher dose can compensate for a shorter contact and a longer contact for a lower dose. In practice a modest dose with a properly sized retention tank is preferable to a high dose with none: it is easier to handle, easier on the carbon stage that follows, and less likely to produce taste complaints. A contact tank sized only for average flow gives very little contact when several fixtures run at once.

Measure the residual, not the dose

This is the practical point that replaces any number. What matters is that a measurable chlorine residual remains after the contact time, which shows the demand has been satisfied and there was enough left over to disinfect. So the setting is arrived at by adjusting the dose and testing the residual downstream of the contact tank, rather than by calculating from a table. It is also the ongoing check: a residual that has disappeared means a blocked injector, a stale solution or a change in the water.

Follow the guidance for the job in hand

Shock chlorination of a well, continuous chlorination of a supply, and emergency disinfection of stored water are three different procedures with different published methods, and the quantities come from those methods and the product label rather than from a general rule.
