Point of use or whole house
If the only complaint is the taste of drinking water and the smell of ice, a point of use filter under the sink or on the faucet is the cheaper and simpler answer, and it can be sized generously because the flow is low. If chlorine is drying skin and hair in the shower, or you want it gone from the laundry and the water heater, the filter has to sit where the main line enters the house. Whole-house carbon is a backwashing tank or a large cartridge housing, and it needs a drain nearby if it backwashes. Maintenance and what carbon does not do
Carbon has a finite capacity. When it is exhausted the water simply tastes like chlorine again, with no warning light and no leak, so change intervals are set by the manufacturer and by how much water your household actually uses. A spent bed can also harbor bacterial growth, which is a good reason not to run one long past its date. Will a carbon filter remove the chlorine smell from my shower?
