Its consequences are that it adds hardness as it works and that its lift is limited, so strongly acidic water may not reach the target. Soda ash gives precise control, can lift pH further, and adds sodium rather than calcium, which suits a household that does not want additional hardness. Living with the dosing system

Mix the solution to the concentration the system is set for and keep it fresh, since a weak batch under doses silently.
