Acidic water is a corrosion problem rather than a health one, and it announces itself through the plumbing: blue green staining in basins, a metallic taste, and eventually pinhole leaks in copper pipe. A pH filter raises the water's pH so it stops dissolving the metal it runs through, and there are two common ways of doing it with different consequences.
Recognising the problem
Blue green staining around fixtures and in basins is dissolved copper depositing as water evaporates, and it is the clearest sign. A metallic or bitter taste first thing in the morning, when water has stood in the pipes, is another. Pinhole leaks in copper pipework, particularly in a house that has never had plumbing trouble before, are the expensive version. Soft, low mineral water from shallow wells in granite country is commonly acidic, and it is worth testing pH and alkalinity together, since alkalinity is what resists the swing.
Calcite neutralizer tanks
The common answer is a backwashing vessel filled with calcite, a calcium carbonate media that dissolves slowly into acidic water and raises its pH as it does. It is simple, needs no chemicals or dosing pump, and backwashes periodically to keep the bed from packing. Two consequences follow from how it works: the media is consumed and has to be topped up on a schedule, and because it dissolves calcium into the water, it makes the water harder. On water that was already hard that matters; on soft acidic water it is usually a modest change.
Soda ash injection
The alternative doses a solution of soda ash into the line with a metering pump, in the same way a chlorination system doses chlorine. It raises pH without adding hardness, gives precise control, and can lift pH further than calcite comfortably will, which matters where the water is strongly acidic. In exchange it is more equipment: a solution tank, a pump, and the routine of mixing and refilling. It also adds sodium, which is worth noting for households already thinking about sodium from a softener.
Where it goes and what follows
Neutralization goes early in the train, ahead of anything that is pH sensitive, which includes iron and especially manganese oxidation, since manganese needs a higher pH before it will oxidize readily. It also protects everything downstream from the corrosion that prompted it.
