Acidic water is water with a pH below neutral, and it announces itself through the plumbing rather than through taste: blue-green staining in sinks and tubs, a metallic edge to the water, corroded fittings and eventually pinhole leaks in copper pipe. It is common in soft, low-mineral groundwater and in areas with granite bedrock or heavy rainfall, and it is treated by adding alkalinity back, not by filtering anything out.
How acidic water gives itself away
The classic sign is a blue or turquoise stain where water sits: around the drain, under a dripping faucet, in the toilet tank. That color is dissolved copper leached out of the pipes by the water itself, which means the plumbing is being consumed slowly. Other signs are a bitter or metallic taste, frequent failures of brass fittings and water heater elements, and pinhole leaks appearing in copper lines that are nowhere near old enough to fail. Green staining on a well supply is worth acting on quickly.
Confirm it before you treat it
pH is easy and cheap to measure, and a meter or a good test kit tells you within minutes whether the supply is genuinely acidic. Test at an outside spigot before any treatment equipment, and test a sample that has stood in the pipes overnight as well, because the difference between the two shows how much metal the water is picking up on its way to the tap. Private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so the owner is the only person who will ever run this test.
Neutralizing filters and soda ash injection
The standard treatment is a backwashing tank filled with calcite, sometimes blended with a magnesium oxide medium for water that is very aggressive. Water passing through dissolves a small amount of the medium and comes out closer to neutral. The medium is consumed and gets topped up periodically, and the tank backwashes to prevent packing. Where the pH is very low or the flow is high, a soda ash solution injected by a metering pump does the same job with tighter control and no bed to refill.
The knock-on effect on hardness and softeners
A calcite neutralizer works by dissolving calcium into the water, so it raises hardness as a side effect. On a supply that was already borderline you can end up trading corrosion for scale. USGS classes water as soft up to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate, moderately hard from 61 to 120, hard from 121 to 180 and very hard above 180, and a neutralizer can move a supply up a class. Is acidic water dangerous to drink?
The acidity itself is not the concern. The metals it dissolves out of your pipes are, which is why copper and lead show up in tests on acidic supplies.
What causes the blue-green stains in my sink?

Will a water softener fix acidic water?
