A pH neutralizer is a tank of calcium carbonate media that acidic water dissolves a little of as it passes, raising the pH toward neutral. It is the standard fix for well water that leaves blue-green stains in sinks, pinholes copper pipe and chews through fittings. The trade is that it adds hardness to the water on its way through, which changes what else you need.
How acidic water announces itself
Low pH rarely tastes of anything, so it is usually diagnosed from damage. Blue or blue-green staining in tubs, sinks and toilets is dissolved copper coming out of your own pipes. Pinhole leaks in copper lines, corroded brass fittings, a failed water heater element and metallic taste all point the same way. On a private well this is common in areas with granite bedrock and little limestone, where water passes through rock that gives it nothing to buffer with, and since private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, nobody flags it for you. What is in the tank
The usual media is calcite, crushed and graded calcium carbonate. Acidic water dissolves a small amount of it, which consumes acidity and lifts the pH. Where the water is very aggressive, calcite alone cannot lift the pH far enough, and a magnesium oxide media is blended in to add more correction, though it must be used sparingly because it can overshoot. The tank has a backwashing control valve on top that periodically lifts and reclassifies the bed, clearing out sediment and preventing the media from packing into a channel.
The catch: it makes your water harder
The media works by dissolving, and what dissolves is calcium, which is hardness. So a neutralizer that fixes corrosion will raise your hardness figure, sometimes enough to create a scaling problem you did not previously have. On a well that already carries hardness, the standard build is a neutralizer first and a softener after it, in that order, so the softener removes the calcium the neutralizer added along with the original load. Sizing both together at the outset is much cheaper than adding a softener later.
Maintenance and the alternative
Media is consumed rather than exhausted, so the tank needs topping up periodically, and the bed level is the thing to check. The valve needs a backwash schedule set for your water. Where the pH is only marginally low, a soda ash injection system is the other route: it feeds sodium carbonate with a metering pump, adds no hardness and gives finer control, at the cost of a chemical to refill and a pump to maintain.
