Sizing a well water ph neutralizer to the flow it must treat

The most common disappointment with a neutralizing tank is that the pH barely moves after installation, and the cause is almost never the media. It is contact time: the water passes through the bed too quickly for the reaction to do much, because the tank was sized to the space available rather than to the household's flow.

Why sizing decides the result

Calcite dissolves into acidic water at a rate set by chemistry, and the amount dissolved depends on how long the water is in contact with the media. Double the flow through a given bed and each drop spends half as long in it, so the pH lift roughly halves. That is why a tank sized for a modest draw performs adequately at one tap and does almost nothing during a shower with a washing machine running, which is precisely when most of the water is being used.

Sizing to peak flow, not average

Take the household's peak simultaneous demand rather than its daily total, because it is the peak that determines the worst case contact time. On a well, that also has to sit within what the pump actually delivers. Bigger is generally better here, since an oversized bed simply gives more contact and calcite is self limiting near neutral, so overshooting is difficult. The constraint on going larger is the backwash requirement rather than the treatment itself.

The backwash constraint

The bed must be backwashed periodically to lift and reclassify the media so it does not cement into a channelled mass, and that needs a flow rate the well can genuinely deliver plus a drain that will take it. On a low yield borehole the backwash requirement for a large tank can exceed what the well produces, which is a real design limit rather than a detail, and it sometimes decides the choice between a tank and a soda ash injection system on its own.

Media, and when calcite is not enough

Calcite handles moderately acidic water and self limits near neutral. Where the pH is very low it works too slowly within any practical contact time, and magnesium oxide media is blended in, which is far more aggressive and overshoots easily if the ratio is wrong.
