Water staining is a diagnosis you can make by eye. The color that appears in the tub, the toilet or the sink identifies the mineral doing it, and the mineral determines the treatment. Scrubbing the surface treats the symptom, so identify the color first, confirm it with a test, and then decide whether the fix belongs at the fixture or on the incoming line.
Orange and brown: iron
Rust colored streaks below taps, in the toilet bowl and on white laundry mean iron. Penn State Extension treats iron and manganese as secondary, aesthetic contaminants with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L iron and 0.05 mg/L manganese, which are staining and taste thresholds rather than health limits. If the water is clear when poured and turns orange only after standing, the iron is dissolved. If it arrives orange, it has already oxidized and needs filtering rather than exchanging.
Black and dark brown: manganese
Manganese produces darker staining, often almost black, and it does so at far lower concentrations than iron, which is why the recommended maximum for it is so much lower. It commonly appears alongside iron on wells, and it shows up as dark specks in the toilet cistern, dark smears in the dishwasher and grey patches on laundry. It is also more stubborn to treat, generally needing oxidation followed by an appropriate media bed rather than a softener alone.
Blue-green, pink and white
Blue or green staining is copper being dissolved out of your own pipework, which points to acidic water and calls for a pH test and probably a neutralizer. Pink or orange slime in the toilet rim or shower is an airborne bacterium feeding on soap residue, not a water contaminant, and it responds to cleaning rather than filtration. Chalky white crust on aerators, glass doors and kettles is hardness scale, which is calcium and magnesium coming out of solution.
Removing the stain and stopping it returning
For iron and manganese marks, an oxalic acid based rust remover works on porcelain and grout where chlorine bleach will not, and bleach can actually set an iron stain darker. Scale responds to a mild acid such as vinegar.
