Well filter is a category, not a product. The unit that fixes orange staining is not the one that fixes a rotten egg smell, and neither of them touches grit. The fastest way to shop is to work backwards from the symptom to the cause, confirm the cause with a test, and only then choose the media. Buying a general purpose well filter without doing that usually treats one problem and leaves the others.
Orange and brown staining is iron
Rust colored stains in the tub, orange in the toilet cistern and metallic tasting water point to iron. Penn State Extension notes that iron and manganese carry secondary, aesthetic standards, with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese, and that black staining is manganese rather than iron. The usual fix is an oxidizing filter that converts dissolved iron into a particle and then traps it in a media bed, backwashing the accumulated solids to drain on a schedule.
Rotten egg smell is sulfur, and it needs oxidation too
Hydrogen sulfide gas gives well water its rotten egg smell, and it is often worse on the hot side because heat drives the gas out of solution. Carbon alone will knock back a light odor for a while but exhausts fast on a real sulfur problem. The durable answer is oxidation, whether by an air injection filter, a chemical feed or a catalytic media bed, followed by filtration. If the smell only appears at the hot tap, suspect the water heater anode rather than the well.
Grit, cloudiness and black specks
Sand and grit in the aerators means sediment filtration, usually a flushable spin-down screen ahead of a cartridge so the cartridge does not clog weekly. Persistent cloudiness that does not settle can be very fine clay or air, and air clears from the bottom of a glass upward while sediment settles down. Black specks are often oxidized manganese or, in older systems, degraded rubber from a pressure tank or hose, which is a repair rather than a filtration problem.
Choose the filter after the test, not before
Symptoms overlap. Iron and manganese occur together, sulfur bacteria produce odor and slime that look like a filtration problem but need disinfection, and a low pH quietly determines whether iron treatment will work at all. Penn State's guidance is that a softener can remove dissolved iron only when pH is above 6.7, hardness is between 3 and 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron is under 5 mg/L, and that oxidized iron fouls resin. Questions people ask about well filter
Can one well filter handle iron, sulfur and sediment?
Some air injection units address iron, manganese and sulfur together in one tank, but sediment still belongs in a separate stage ahead of them. A single cartridge filter cannot do all three, whatever the packaging suggests.
Does a well filter remove bacteria?
Filtration alone generally does not. Bacteria are handled by disinfection, usually an ultraviolet unit on clear water or chlorine injection, and filtration comes first so the water is clear enough for the disinfection to work.
Why does my well filter clog so quickly?
Usually because the element is too fine for the water or because there is no coarse stage ahead of it. Adding a flushable spin-down screen before the cartridge spreads the load and dramatically extends cartridge life.
Do I need a filter if my well water looks and tastes fine?
Appearance is not evidence. Nitrate, arsenic and bacteria are invisible and tasteless, and nobody tests a private well on the owner's behalf, so an annual laboratory test is the baseline whether or not you install any filtration.
