Choosing a well filter housing that survives the duty

A housing on a well works harder than the same housing on a municipal supply, and for reasons that are easy to miss when comparing products. Well systems cycle pressure many times a day as the pump starts and stops, they often sit in unheated spaces, and they carry a heavier and more abrasive load. All three shorten the life of the wrong housing.

Pressure cycling is the hidden duty

A municipal supply holds a fairly steady pressure. A well system rises and falls between the pump's cut in and cut out pressures every time water is drawn, so the housing sees continuous cycling rather than a static load. That fatigues plastic bodies and works the sump to cap seal, which is why a housing that lasts for years on a city supply can weep on a well within a season. Check the pressure rating against the pump's cut out setting rather than against average pressure.

Cold locations and freezing

Well equipment often lives in a basement, an outbuilding, a pump house or a pit, and a housing full of water splits when it freezes. That failure usually occurs unnoticed and reveals itself as a flood on the thaw. Where the location can drop below freezing, either heat trace and insulate the assembly or plan to drain it seasonally. Clear sumps are more vulnerable than opaque ones and also grow algae wherever daylight reaches them, which then seeds the whole line downstream.

Sizing for a heavier load

Sediment loads on a well are far higher and far less predictable than on a treated supply, so a slim housing is rarely the right answer. Use big diameter housings with ports matched to the service line, and stage them: a coarse cartridge first taking the bulk, a finer one after it. On genuinely sandy wells put a centrifugal separator ahead of the housings entirely, since cartridges alone are consumed too fast to be practical. Servicing it where it sits

Well installations are often in awkward places, so plan the service access as carefully as the plumbing. Leave clearance below the sump equal to its depth, mount the bracket to a solid surface rather than the pipework, and fit isolation valves either side plus a bypass, since a property on a well has no alternative supply during a change. Replace the O ring every time with potable silicone grease, never petroleum. And fit gauges either side, which on a well is the only honest indication of cartridge condition.
