A plastic filter housing is the canister that holds a cartridge under pressure, and it is the part of a water filter most likely to fail in a way that floods a basement. Housings age from within: the plastic embrittles, the sealing surface wears, and the o-ring groove loses its shape, all of which happen long before anything looks wrong from the outside.

Why housings fail, and what a failure looks like

Most housings are moulded from polypropylene or a clear styrene blend, both of which lose toughness with age, heat and ultraviolet exposure. A housing in a sunny utility room, or one downstream of a hot water source, embrittles faster than one in a cool dark basement. The failure mode is usually a crack starting at the threaded shoulder where the sump meets the cap, which is where the stress concentrates, and it often shows as a weep before it shows as a split. Pressure surges from a well pump cycling or a water hammer event finish off a housing that was already marginal.

The o-ring is behind most leaks

Before condemning a housing, check the o-ring. Leaks after a cartridge change are almost always a dry, pinched, twisted or dirty o-ring rather than a failed housing. The routine is simple: remove the ring, wipe the groove clean, inspect the ring for flat spots or nicks, coat it in silicone grease made for potable water, seat it evenly, and hand tighten the sump against it. Overtightening with a wrench does not fix a leak and does damage the sealing shoulder. Keep a spare ring for each housing size you own, since the ring is the one part guaranteed to need replacing.

When to move up to a heavier housing

Clear housings are convenient because you can see the cartridge loading up, and they are the weakest of the common types since transparent plastics are more brittle. Opaque housings are tougher. Reinforced and stainless options exist for higher pressure or hot water duty. If your system sits on a well with a wide pressure differential, if the housing feeds anything warm, or if a failure would soak a finished space, the heavier housing is worth the difference. Check the pressure and temperature ratings moulded into the housing itself rather than trusting a listing, and never exceed either.

How long to keep one, and the maintenance that extends it

Manufacturers commonly recommend replacing plastic housings every several years regardless of appearance, which is a reasonable rule given that embrittlement is invisible. Practical measures help: install a bracket so the housing hangs from the wall instead of loading the plumbing, fit a pressure regulator where line pressure is high, keep the housing out of sunlight, and clean the sump at each cartridge change rather than only when it looks bad. How tight should a filter housing be?

Hand tight against a greased o-ring, then a light nudge with the housing wrench if it still weeps. Cranking it down deforms the sealing shoulder and makes the next leak worse.

Can I use plumber's tape on a housing thread?

Not on the sump thread, which seals on the o-ring rather than the thread. Tape belongs on the tapered pipe threads going into the inlet and outlet ports.

What grease is safe for a potable water o-ring?

A silicone grease rated for potable water contact. Petroleum-based grease swells and degrades the rubber, and cooking oils go rancid inside the housing.

Do clear housings promote algae growth?

They can, if light reaches them. Keep clear housings out of direct light or fit a cover, since algae in the sump both looks unpleasant and shortens cartridge life.
