A water filter housing is the pressure vessel that holds a cartridge, and it quietly decides everything else: which cartridges you can buy, how much flow you get, and whether the whole assembly leaks. Choosing one is mostly about matching three things, the cartridge length, the body width and the port size, and then never letting the o ring dry out.
The two dimensions that define a housing
Cartridge length comes in two common standards, the shorter ten inch body and the taller twenty inch body, and the width is either the slim standard diameter or the wide body commonly called big blue. Those four combinations cover most residential filtration, and the cartridge market is built around them, which is why an odd proprietary size is a long term liability. The wide body holds far more media, so it loads more slowly and drops less pressure, which is why whole house installations favor it even though the cartridges cost more.
Ports, threads and flow
Housing inlet and outlet ports are threaded, and the port size sets the practical flow limit regardless of how big the cartridge is. Fitting a housing with narrow ports on a main line necks the whole house down to that opening, which shows as poor pressure whenever two fixtures run. Match the port to the pipe you are cutting into rather than to the cartridge, and check whether the threads are tapered pipe thread or straight, because a straight thread needs a gasket and a tapered one needs sealant on the threads.
The o ring is the whole seal
Almost every housing leak is the sump o ring, not a crack. It sits in a groove at the top of the sump and seals against the cap, and it fails when it is pinched during reassembly, when it dries out, or when it is reused too many times. Keep the groove clean, replace the o ring whenever a new cartridge is fitted if the manufacturer supplies one, and lubricate it with silicone grease rated for potable water, never petroleum jelly, which swells the rubber. Hand tight plus a light pull on the wrench is enough; overtightening distorts the seal.
Pressure relief buttons and clear sumps
Many housings include a small pressure relief button on the cap, which lets you bleed the trapped pressure before unscrewing the sump. Use it, because a housing under line pressure will fight you and then release suddenly. Clear sumps let you see cartridge loading and any biological growth at a glance, which is genuinely useful on a well, but they should not sit in daylight because light encourages growth. Opaque housings are stronger and are the right choice on higher pressure lines.
When a housing needs replacing rather than resealing
Plastic housings age. Repeated pressure cycling, hot water exposure and mineral deposits leave stress crazing that shows as fine lines in the plastic, and a housing that has weeping threads or a visible crack should be replaced rather than patched, because it is a pressure vessel on your main line. Install a shutoff either side so a future change takes minutes, and if the housing is in a finished space put a pan and a leak sensor under it.
