The housing is the pressure vessel that holds a cartridge, and it deserves more attention than it usually gets, because the cartridge is what you buy repeatedly while the housing is what floods the utility room. Almost every whole house filter problem is a housing problem: a dry O ring, an over tightened sump, a port too small for the flow, or a plastic body left in sunlight.
Sizes and ports, and getting them right
Housings are described by the cartridge they take, most commonly the standard ten inch, the slim twenty inch and the big diameter versions of both. The big diameter sizes carry far more media, which means longer intervals and much lower pressure drop, and they are the sensible choice on a whole house feed. Port size is separate and matters just as much: a large housing fed through undersized ports throttles the house regardless of the cartridge inside it. Match the port to the service line, not to the housing's own thread options.
The O ring is the whole story
The single seal between the sump and the cap is what stands between you and a flooded floor. Replace it with every cartridge change rather than reusing it, keep it lightly greased with a silicone lubricant approved for potable water, and never use petroleum grease, which swells and destroys it. Seat it fully in its groove and check by eye all the way round before closing up, because a ring pinched half out of the groove holds until pressure settles and then weeps. Hand tighten with the supplied wrench and stop there: over tightening distorts the sump and causes the leak it was meant to prevent.
Clear sumps, opaque sumps, and sunlight
Clear housings let you see the cartridge and the water, which is genuinely useful for judging sediment load, and they are the reason many people never check pressure. They also grow algae if any daylight reaches them, and the growth then seeds the whole line. Opaque housings avoid that and are usually rated for higher pressure and temperature. If a clear sump is going somewhere with any natural light, plan to keep it covered. Neither type belongs outdoors unprotected, where UV embrittles the plastic and freezing splits it.
Fitting it so it survives
Mount the housing on its bracket to a solid surface rather than letting it hang on the plumbing, because a full sump is heavy and the weight works fittings loose over time. Leave clearance below equal to the sump depth or you cannot get the cartridge out without cutting pipework. Fit isolation valves either side and a bypass if the house cannot go without water during a change, and put a pressure gauge before and after if the supply matters, since that is how you know when to change rather than guessing.
