The canister, or sump, is the part that holds the water and the pressure while the cartridge does the filtering, and it is judged on three things: whether it holds pressure safely, whether it seals reliably, and whether it opens again without a fight when the cartridge is due. Most complaints about filter housings are really complaints about one of those.
Pressure, material and where it lives
Canisters are rated for a working pressure at a stated temperature, usually cold, and the rating does not carry over to hot water: standard polymer softens on a hot feed and the safe pressure falls with it. Sunlight embrittles plastic over time, so a canister in a garage window or an outbuilding has a shorter life than the same part in a basement. Stainless canisters handle heat, higher pressure and ultraviolet exposure, which are duties most households do not have.
The o-ring does all the sealing
A large o-ring sitting in a machined groove is what holds pressure between the canister and the cap, and nearly every leak found the morning after a filter change is that seal: dirt left in the groove, a twist during reassembly, or a ring that has hardened with age. Clean the groove, inspect the ring for flats and cracks, lubricate with food grade silicone grease and seat it evenly. Keep spares, because they cost almost nothing and a hardened ring is not worth reusing.
Opening it again
Two features make this easy and their absence makes it miserable: a pressure release button on the cap, and lugs the correct wrench engages properly. Release pressure before applying force, since most stuck canisters are simply still pressurised. Use the wrench sized for that housing rather than a generic one, which rounds off the lugs and eventually forces a replacement. And do not over tighten on reassembly, because hand tight plus a modest pull is enough and over tightening is why the next change is hard.
Clear or opaque
A clear canister lets you see the cartridge, which is genuinely useful for judging sediment loading and spotting a channelled element, and it is the easiest way to know a change is due without gauges. Opaque canisters resist light and therefore algae growth, which matters where the housing sits somewhere bright: a clear housing in daylight will grow green over time.
