A canister water filter is the familiar arrangement of a cartridge inside a screw off sump, plumbed into a line and serviced by swapping the element. It is the workhorse format of domestic filtration, used everywhere from a fridge feed to a whole house main, and its strengths and its limits both follow from the same fact: everything happens in a replaceable cartridge.
Why the format persists
It is cheap to buy, simple to plumb, needs no power, no drain and no controller, and it is serviced by anybody with a wrench and ten minutes. Cartridges are widely available in standard sizes so a household is not tied to one supplier, and the same housing can be given a completely different duty by putting a different cartridge in it: sediment today, carbon block next year. Multiple canisters in series build a staged system without any of the complexity of media tanks.
The capacity ceiling
A cartridge holds a fixed amount of media and nothing regenerates it, so every duty is limited by how much fits in the sump. That is fine for sediment, where the cartridge is cheap and the interval is reasonable. It becomes marginal for whole house chlorine removal, where the carbon needed exceeds what a canister holds and a backwashing tank is the correct answer. And it is impossible for softening, which needs a resin bed and a regeneration cycle that no canister provides.
Where the running cost bites
The purchase price is the smaller number over any reasonable period. Cartridges are bought repeatedly, and on dirty water or a heavy chlorine load the interval shortens until the annual spend exceeds what a media tank would have cost to run. Compare on several years rather than on the unit price, and be honest about the interval your water will actually impose rather than the manufacturer's figure, which assumes clean municipal supply. Getting the installation right
Big diameter housings on a whole house feed, slim ones for point of use, and ports matched to the service line rather than to the cheapest thread option. Isolation valves either side and a bypass around the bank. Clearance below equal to the sump depth or the cartridge cannot come out. Bracket mounted to a solid surface, since a full sump is heavy. Fresh O ring and potable silicone grease at every change. And pressure gauges either side, which is the only honest way to know when a cartridge is spent.
