A whole house water filter cartridge is the consumable inside the housing on your main line, and it is what actually does the filtering. Buying the right replacement means matching three things: the physical size of the housing, the media type your water needs, and the rating appropriate to the job. Get any one wrong and you will have a cartridge that does not fit, does not help, or chokes the whole house.
Identify the size before anything else
Whole house cartridges come in a small number of standard sizes, and the industry describes them by nominal diameter and length. The large diameter housings often called big blue take a fat cartridge with far more media and much better flow than the slim standard housings used under sinks. Measure the old cartridge, or read the housing label, before ordering. A cartridge that is too short will let water bypass around it entirely, which is the classic reason a newly serviced filter appears to do nothing at all despite looking correctly installed.
Media types and what each is for
Polypropylene sediment cartridges catch grit, sand and rust particles and protect everything behind them. Granular carbon cartridges remove chlorine, taste and odor with low pressure drop and high capacity. Carbon block cartridges filter finer, resist channeling and can carry certified reductions for contaminants such as lead. Pleated cartridges present a large surface area for particles and some can be rinsed. Specialty cartridges add iron, scale or ultraviolet-preparation duty. Most houses end up with a sediment cartridge in the first housing and a carbon cartridge in the second, in that order.
Rating, flow and pressure drop
Every cartridge trades filtration fineness against flow. Fitting a very fine cartridge in a whole house housing is how households end up with weak showers, because the pressure loss across the media applies to every fixture at once. Size against peak simultaneous demand rather than daily volume: the shower and the washing machine running together is the moment that judges the system. If the house needs both fine filtration and full flow, use a larger housing or two housings in series rather than forcing one small cartridge to do everything.
Changing one without making a mess
Close the inlet valve, or the bypass if the system has one, then open a downstream tap to release pressure. Press the pressure relief button on the housing cap if fitted. Have a bucket and towels ready, because the housing is full of water and it will come out. Unscrew with the manufacturer's wrench, lift out the old cartridge, wipe the sump clean, and inspect the O-ring: clean it, lubricate it with silicone grease approved for potable water, and replace it if it is flattened or nicked, since a tired O-ring is the usual cause of a slow drip after a change.
Schedules, stock and pressure gauges
Sediment cartridges are changed on pressure difference, so fitting gauges either side of the housing turns guesswork into a reading. Carbon cartridges are changed on rated capacity or elapsed time, whichever comes first, because carbon exhausts silently while flow stays perfect. Keep at least one spare of each on the shelf, since the day a cartridge fails is rarely the day a delivery arrives. How do I find out which cartridge my housing takes?
Measure the old cartridge's diameter and length, or read the model number on the housing body. Standard sizes dominate the market, so a measurement is usually enough to order a compatible replacement from any supplier.
Can I put a carbon cartridge in the first housing?
You can, but it is the wrong order. Sediment belongs first so grit does not blind the carbon and waste its adsorption capacity, which is the whole reason two-housing systems are arranged the way they are.
Why is my water pressure low after changing the cartridge?
Usually the new cartridge is too fine for whole house duty, or air is trapped in the housing. Flush a downstream tap to purge air first, and if pressure stays low, fit a coarser rating or add a second housing in series.
Do pleated cartridges last longer than melt blown ones?
