A whole house chlorine filter sits on the incoming main and strips the disinfectant out of every tap, shower and appliance in the building. The two decisions that decide whether it works are the carbon type, which depends on whether your utility uses chlorine or chloramine, and the size, which decides whether it can keep up with the house.

Read your water report before choosing media

Every community water system publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report on the water it delivers, and the EPA maintains a finder to locate yours. It names the disinfectant. Free chlorine is straightforward for standard granular activated carbon. Chloramine, chlorine bound to ammonia, is far more persistent and needs catalytic carbon plus a deeper bed and longer contact. Buying a general purpose carbon filter for a chloraminated supply is the single most common mistake, and the symptom is subtle: the water improves a little but the smell never really goes.

Tank systems versus cartridge systems

A backwashing tank holds a deep bed of loose carbon, delivers good flow with low pressure drop, and periodically backwashes itself to prevent the bed compacting and channeling. It needs a drain and an outlet, and the media is replaced at long intervals. Upflow tanks avoid the drain by letting water lift the bed instead of backwashing it. Cartridge systems use replaceable carbon blocks in housings, install anywhere, need no drain or power, and cost less to fit, but they are changed far more often and have a smaller carbon mass. Sizing for flow, not for the number of bathrooms

Carbon works by contact, so the flow rate through the bed decides how much chlorine actually gets removed. Manufacturers publish a service flow rating for each model, and that is the figure to compare against your realistic peak: two showers plus a washing machine, not the household average. Undersize the unit and you get both a pressure drop you can feel and chlorine breaking through at the tap. Pipe size matters too, since running a large tank on a narrow inlet throttles it regardless of the media inside. What it does and does not remove

Carbon is excellent on chlorine, chloramine with the right grade, taste, odor and many organic compounds. It does not soften water, so scale continues exactly as before, and it does not remove dissolved iron, nitrate or hardness minerals. It is not a bacteria barrier. Knowing when the media is spent

A carbon bed gives almost no warning. Pressure and flow stay normal while the media quietly stops adsorbing, so the first symptom is chlorine taste or smell returning, and by then the bed has been passing chlorine for some time. Keep chlorine test strips and check a downstream tap on a schedule rather than waiting to notice. Replace media on the manufacturer's interval adjusted for your actual water: a heavily chlorinated supply exhausts carbon faster. On a sediment heavy supply, add a prefilter so grit does not blind the bed prematurely.

Does a whole house chlorine filter remove chloramine?

Only if it uses catalytic carbon with enough bed depth and contact time. Standard activated carbon removes free chlorine well but handles chloramine poorly.

Will a chlorine filter soften my water?

No. Carbon does not remove calcium and magnesium, so scale on kettles, showerheads and heating elements continues unchanged. Softening is a separate ion exchange step.

Does a whole house chlorine filter need a drain?
