Whole house water filter sizes and how to pick one

Whole house water filter sizes are quoted in two different languages: the physical format of the cartridge or tank, and the hydraulic duty it can carry. Buyers usually shop by the first and are then disappointed by the second. The dimension that decides whether a filter works in your house is the flow it can pass at an acceptable pressure drop, and that comes from peak simultaneous demand.

The physical formats you will see

Cartridge systems come in a small number of standard bodies. There is a slim standard cartridge, the double-length version of the same diameter, and a wide heavy-duty body usually sold under the big blue name, which holds considerably more medium and carries a much larger port. Housings are then specified by the inlet and outlet thread, which should match or exceed your service pipe rather than necking it down. Media tanks are described by tank diameter and height and by how much medium they hold. None of these numbers tell you the duty on their own; they tell you what will physically fit and how much medium is in there.

Peak flow is the real size

Work out the worst realistic moment: two showers running while a washing machine fills is normal in a family home, and an outside tap or a dishwasher on top of that is not unusual. That combined figure is what the filter has to pass while the pressure at the taps stays acceptable. Vendors publish a service flow rating for each system, and the honest way to buy is to choose one comfortably above your peak rather than exactly at it, because a cartridge loses capacity as it loads and a media bed needs headroom. Bedroom counts and floor area are proxies that routinely mislead.

Port size, pressure drop and pipe runs

A large housing on small ports is still a restriction, so check the inlet and outlet against your service pipe before anything else. Every stage you add contributes its own pressure drop, and they add up: a sediment cartridge, a carbon tank and a softener in series on a house that already has modest incoming pressure will be noticeable at an upstairs shower. If your supply pressure is at the low end, either step the equipment up a size or reduce the number of stages to the ones your test results justify. Gauges either side of the assembly turn this from an argument into a reading.

Backwash flow sizes the drain, not just the filter

Media tanks bring a second sizing question that cartridge systems avoid. During backwash the bed has to be fluidised, which needs a specific flow the supply must be able to deliver and a drain that can accept it without backing up. A tank sized correctly for service flow but starved on backwash will cement and channel within a year, and then pass the very sediment it was bought to catch. Does a bigger filter always mean better filtration?

No. A larger body holds more medium and lasts longer between changes, but what it removes is set by the medium and its rating, not by the size of the housing.

How do I work out my peak flow?

Add the fixtures that could realistically run at once, typically two showers plus an appliance, and size above that figure so the filter has headroom as it loads.

Will a whole house filter reduce my water pressure?

A correctly sized one causes a small drop that you should not notice. Noticeable loss means the unit is undersized, the ports are restricting flow, or the cartridge is loaded.

What size ports should the housing have?

At least the size of your service pipe. Necking a larger pipe down into a small housing port creates a restriction that no amount of filter capacity compensates for.
