Where a single cartridge runs out

Hardness needs ion exchange with a resin bed and a regeneration cycle, which no cartridge can provide. Iron in solution needs oxidation before anything can catch it. And bacteria need disinfection. A single inline cartridge is a first stage, and the honest question when buying one is whether the water needs more than a first stage.

Sizing it so the house does not notice

This is where these installations most often go wrong. A slim housing on a whole house main restricts flow noticeably and blinds quickly, so use a big diameter housing with ports matched to the service line rather than to the housing's smallest thread option. Choose a cartridge rating suited to the water rather than the tightest available, since a fine element on a dirty supply costs pressure within weeks. Where the supply is genuinely dirty, a backwashing media tank ahead of the cartridge is the better arrangement.

Installing it to be serviceable

On the main after the meter and main shutoff, before any branch, and always ahead of the water heater. Take the irrigation tap off ahead of the filter so garden water does not consume cartridge capacity. Fit isolation valves either side and a bypass loop, so a cartridge change does not shut the property down. Leave sump depth clearance below.
