A carbon whole house filter sits on the main line where water enters the property and treats everything the house uses: showers, laundry, kitchen and outside taps. Carbon adsorbs chlorine, taste and odor compounds and many organics, and the single factor that decides whether it does that well is how long the water spends in contact with the media.
Contact time is the whole design problem
Adsorption is not instant. Water has to move slowly enough through the carbon bed for the compounds to reach the pore surfaces and stick. A large tank with a deep bed gives that time at household flow rates. A small cartridge housing does not, which is why a big blue cartridge on the main line reduces chlorine noticeably less than the tank system it is often compared with, and exhausts far sooner. Size on the peak flow your house can draw, not on average daily use.
Granular carbon, catalytic carbon and carbon block
Standard granular activated carbon is the workhorse for chlorine, taste and odor at whole house scale. Catalytic carbon is a treated grade that handles chloramine, the more stable disinfectant many utilities now use, which ordinary carbon struggles with. Carbon block is a compressed form used in cartridges, with a real micron rating and particle filtration to match, but it restricts flow too much for a main line. Ask which disinfectant your utility uses before you choose the grade.
Backwashing tanks versus cartridge housings
Tank systems with a control valve backwash themselves on a schedule, lifting and rinsing the bed to shed trapped sediment and prevent channeling. They need a drain and a power outlet, and the media is replaced every several years rather than every few months. Cartridge systems need no drain and no power, but somebody has to shut the water off and change elements regularly. Upflow tank designs avoid backwashing altogether and suit properties with no drain nearby.
Sediment first, always
Carbon is expensive media and it should not be used as a strainer. A sediment prefilter ahead of the carbon catches sand, grit and rust so the carbon bed is not blinded by particles it was never meant to hold. On a well this is not optional. On municipal water it is still worth having, because a main break or hydrant flushing will send a slug of sediment down the line and a fouled carbon bed is a far more expensive thing to replace than a cartridge.
Knowing when the media is spent
Carbon exhausts silently. Pressure does not drop, water does not discolor, and the first honest sign is chlorine taste and smell returning at the tap. Manufacturers publish an expected media life in gallons or years for each system, which assumes a stated chlorine load and household use. Questions people ask about carbon whole house filter
Does a carbon whole house filter remove hardness?
No. Calcium and magnesium pass straight through carbon, so scale, spotting and poor soap lather continue. Hardness needs a softener or a conditioner, which is separate equipment on the same line.
Will it reduce water pressure?
A correctly sized tank system causes little noticeable loss. Pressure complaints usually mean the system is undersized for the house or the sediment prefilter ahead of it is overdue for a change.
Does carbon remove bacteria?
No, and a damp carbon bed can support bacterial growth in stagnant conditions. Microbial concerns are handled by ultraviolet or chlorination, not by a carbon filter on its own.
Should the carbon filter go before or after a softener?
Before, on municipal water. Removing chlorine and chloramine first protects the softener resin from oxidation, which is one of the main causes of resin losing capacity early.
