A whole house carbon water filtration system treats every drop entering the building, and specifying one comes down to four decisions: whether the carbon lives in a backwashing tank or a cartridge housing, which grade of carbon goes in it, how the bed is sized against your peak flow, and where it sits relative to the softener and the water heater. Get those right and it works for years with almost no attention.

Tank or cartridge, and how to choose

A backwashing tank holds a deep bed of granular carbon and a control valve that periodically reverses the flow to lift the bed, flush out trapped fines and prevent it packing down into channels. It has a long media life, minimal pressure drop and no cartridges to buy, but it needs a drain, an outlet and floor space with headroom. A cartridge system uses large replaceable carbon blocks in housings, which cost less to install, need no drain and can carry certified contaminant reduction claims that loose granular media does not. Cartridges cost more over time and need changing on a schedule somebody has to remember.

Which carbon, and why chloramine changes the answer

Standard granular activated carbon, usually coconut shell or bituminous coal based, adsorbs chlorine, organic chemicals and the compounds responsible for taste and odor. Catalytic carbon is manufactured to have a surface that breaks down chloramine, the combined chlorine and ammonia disinfectant many utilities now use in place of free chlorine, which ordinary carbon handles badly. Establish which one your utility uses before you buy media, because a system built on standard carbon in a chloramine city underperforms in a way that is hard to diagnose from the taste alone. The EPA notes that every community water system publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report and maintains a finder for it, which is where the disinfectant is stated.

Sizing to flow, not to household size

Carbon works by contact time. Water has to be in the bed long enough for adsorption to happen, so the specification that matters is the bed volume relative to the peak flow through it, not the number of people in the house. Undersize it and the water passes too quickly, the chlorine is not fully removed, and the media appears to fail early. Size peak flow honestly: two showers, a dishwasher and an outside hose is a realistic simultaneous load in a family home, and it is far higher than average daily use divided by hours. Pipe size is a poor proxy, so ask for the service flow rating in the specification rather than assuming.

Where it goes in the train

Sediment first, always, so grit does not foul the carbon. Carbon second, ahead of a softener rather than behind it, because chlorine shortens the life of softening resin and there is no reason to make the resin absorb that damage. Living with one

Carbon fails silently. There is no pressure drop to warn you and no visible change in the water; the bed simply stops adsorbing and the chlorine comes back. That means the monitoring is your nose and your tongue, plus an occasional free chlorine test at a tap downstream, which is the cheapest objective check available. In a tank system the backwash cycle also needs watching, since a valve that has stopped cycling lets the bed pack down and channel, so water finds a path through without contact. Expect to replace granular media on a multi-year cycle and cartridges far more often than that.
