A carbon water filtration system treats every gallon entering the house by adsorption: water passes through a bed of activated carbon and organic chemicals, chlorine and taste and odor compounds stick to the carbon's enormous internal surface. It is the workhorse of whole-house treatment, and knowing what carbon does not catch is as useful as knowing what it does.
What carbon removes, and the chloramine catch
Standard activated carbon excels at free chlorine, taste and odor compounds, and a broad range of organic chemicals including many pesticide and solvent residues. The catch is chloramine, the longer-lasting disinfectant many utilities now use instead of chlorine: ordinary carbon reduces it only slowly, while catalytic carbon is processed specifically to break it down at practical flow rates. Your utility's water quality report says which disinfectant your system uses, and that single line determines which carbon you should be buying.
Tank systems versus cartridge systems
Whole-house carbon comes in two formats. Cartridge systems hold carbon blocks in standard housings: cheaper to buy, simple to service, but the cartridges are a recurring cost and can restrict flow in larger homes. Tank systems hold loose granular carbon in an upright vessel, either upflow designs with no moving parts or backwashing versions with a control valve that periodically lifts and resettles the bed to prevent channeling. Tanks cost more up front, flow more freely, and run years before the media itself is replaced rather than months between cartridges.
What carbon leaves for other equipment
Carbon does not soften: hardness minerals pass through untouched, so scale is a separate machine's job. It does not remove dissolved iron or manganese reliably, does not touch nitrates or most dissolved salts, and is not a disinfection stage, so bacteria on a well need UV downstream. That is why carbon usually appears as one stage in a train: sediment ahead of it, softening or iron treatment beside it, UV after it. Questions people ask about carbon water filtration system
Does a carbon system remove chloramine?
Standard carbon handles it poorly at whole-house flow rates. If your utility uses chloramine, specify catalytic carbon, which is processed to break chloramine down at practical speeds.
How long does whole-house carbon media last?
Cartridges run on rated capacity, typically months. Tank media runs years before a rebed, with life depending on chlorine load and water use. Returning chlorine taste is the signal either way.
Will carbon filtration soften my water?
No. Carbon adsorbs chemicals; it does not remove dissolved calcium and magnesium. Scale and soap problems need a softener or conditioner alongside the carbon stage.
