You should filter whole house water when the problem touches more than the glass you drink from: scale on fixtures, chlorine smell in the shower, iron stains in the tub, or sediment wearing out appliances. If the only complaint is drinking water taste at the kitchen sink, a point-of-use filter does that job for far less. The decision is about where the problem shows up, not about which system is better.

Problems that only whole-house treatment fixes

Anything that damages plumbing or appliances has to be stopped at the point of entry, because the harm happens inside pipes, water heaters and washing machines long before water reaches a tap. Hardness scale, sediment abrasion, and iron or manganese staining are all in this class. So is chlorine in shower steam and bath water, which no kitchen filter can touch. If your evidence is crusted shower heads, orange rings in the toilet tank, gritty aerators or fading laundry, filtering one faucet solves none of it, and a point-of-entry system is the only tool aimed at the actual problem.

Problems that do not need it

Taste, odor and dissolved-contaminant concerns in drinking water are point-of-use problems. An under-sink filter or reverse osmosis unit treats the water you actually consume, at a fraction of the equipment size, and delivers a purer result at that tap than a whole-house carbon tank can. Filtering every flush and every lawn hose to fix a drinking water complaint is spending on gallons nobody drinks. How to decide with evidence instead of instinct

Walk the house first: check fixtures for scale, tanks for staining, and aerators for grit, then note where complaints actually occur. On city water, read your utility's Consumer Confidence Report, which the EPA requires every community water system to publish annually, to see what is in the supply before it reaches you. On a well, test. If the findings cluster at one tap, buy for that tap. If they show up everywhere water flows, the point of entry is where the money belongs, sized to your household's peak flow from the vendor's published ratings.
