Water filter cartridges: types, sizes and when to change them

Filter cartridges are defined by two things: the housing they fit and the media inside them. Get the format right and almost any brand will seal; get the media wrong and the cartridge will do nothing about your actual problem. Most replacement mistakes come from buying by brand name rather than by dimension and media type.

Format first: the housing decides the size

Household cartridges come in a small number of standard formats. The common slimline is a ten inch cartridge in a narrow housing, usually under a sink or on a small point-of-entry install. The big blue format is a fatter cartridge in ten or twenty inch lengths, used where flow matters, and it holds several times as much media. Refrigerator and undersink quick-connect cartridges are proprietary and do not interchange. Before ordering anything, pull the old cartridge and measure its length and outside diameter, and check whether the end caps are open on both ends or have a knife-edge seal, because that determines whether it seats properly.

What each media actually does

Spun or pleated polypropylene is a sediment cartridge: it removes particles and nothing dissolved. Granular activated carbon handles chlorine taste and odor with generous flow. Carbon block does the same job with more uniform contact, doubles as a fine sediment barrier and is the format certified reduction claims are usually built on. Catalytic carbon is chosen for chloramine and sulfur odor. Specialty cartridges exist for iron, for lead reduction and for fluoride, and mixed-media cartridges try to do several at once with less of each. Match the media to the test result, not to the marketing on the sleeve.

Working out a replacement schedule

Manufacturer intervals assume average water and average use, and yours is neither. A sediment cartridge is replaced when pressure drops, which on dirty well water can be a matter of weeks. Carbon is replaced when taste or odor returns, and before that if the label gives a volume capacity you can estimate against household use. Specialty media for lead or fluoride give no warning at all when exhausted, so those get a hard calendar or volume limit. Changing one without making a mess

Shut the inlet valve, open a downstream tap to release pressure, then press the housing bypass or relief button if it has one. Support the sump while you unscrew it, because a big blue full of water is heavy. Clean the o-ring groove, inspect the o-ring for nicks and flat spots and lubricate it with silicone grease that is safe for potable water, never petroleum jelly. Seat the new cartridge fully, hand tighten the sump with the wrench only to snug, then open the inlet slowly and flush the new cartridge to a drain or a bucket until the water runs clear and any carbon fines have gone.

Questions people ask about filter cartridges

Can I use a different brand of cartridge in my housing?

Usually yes for standard ten inch and big blue formats, as long as the length, diameter and end cap style match. Proprietary quick-connect and refrigerator cartridges are the exception.

Why does my water taste odd right after a cartridge change?

New carbon sheds fine dust and trapped air on first use. Flush the cartridge to a drain until the water runs clear before you rely on it for drinking.

Do I need to sanitize the housing when I change cartridges?

It is good practice on a well or after a long stagnation. Wash the sump, rinse it thoroughly and let the system flush before returning it to service.

Should I change all cartridges at the same time?

Not necessarily. Sediment stages load up much faster than carbon, so changing them on their own schedule is cheaper than replacing the whole set every time.
