Hose filter types, and when one is the wrong tool

A hose filter is a small canister on an outdoor spigot, and the type inside it decides everything. Sediment media catch grit, carbon media handle chlorine and smell, and deionizing resin removes the dissolved minerals that cause spotting. They are not interchangeable, and for some problems none of them is the right answer at all.

Sediment: the cheapest and the most common

A spun or pleated sediment cartridge catches particles by size, which matters where a supply carries rust flakes, sand or the debris that follows a main break or hydrant flushing. It is the media that protects a pressure washer pump, a paint sprayer or an irrigation head from clogging. Its weakness is that it does nothing to anything dissolved, so it will not change taste, smell or spotting. It also loads up faster than the other types, and the first sign is a hose that has quietly lost its punch.

Carbon: taste, smell and chlorine

Carbon adsorbs chlorine, disinfection byproducts and the organic compounds behind most odors. That makes it the choice for filling a recreational vehicle tank from an unknown campground spigot, for a garden where seedlings and soil biology are sensitive to chlorine, and for anywhere the water will be tasted. Chloramine is the harder case, since it needs a catalytic carbon grade and a slower flow to give it contact time. Carbon is not a disinfection step, so it does not make a questionable supply safe on its own.

Deionizing resin: the spot-free option

Water spots on a car or a window are dried hardness. The USGS defines hardness as dissolved calcium and magnesium, with soft water at 0 to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate and very hard water above 180 mg/L. Only a deionizing resin cartridge removes those dissolved minerals at a hose, which is why detailing rinses use them. The catch is that the resin is consumed in proportion to how much hardness it meets, so on very hard water a cartridge can be spent after a couple of washes and the running cost climbs quickly.

When a hose filter is the wrong tool entirely

A spigot filter treats one outlet. If the reason you are shopping is scale in the water heater, orange staining in the laundry, chlorine at the shower or a contaminant on a test report, no hose filter touches any of it, and the money belongs at the point where water enters the house. Hose filters also cost flow, which irrigation systems and pressure washers feel.
