Hose filters are simple devices and most of the trouble with them is mechanical: the wrong thread, a body hanging unsupported in the middle of a run, or a cartridge so restrictive that filling a tank takes an afternoon. Getting the fittings and the flow right is nearly the whole job, and it is worth ten minutes before ordering.
Threads and connectors
Outdoor taps and hoses in the domestic market use a common hose thread, and most inline filters are supplied with that thread at both ends so they sit between the tap and the hose, or between two hose lengths. Quick connect couplers are the usual complication, since a filter with fixed threads needs a coupler at each end to join a quick connect system, and each junction is a place to leak. Check whether the filter body's threads are male, female or a mix before ordering, and buy a spare washer set at the same time.
Mount it at the tap, not in the middle
The single most common mistake is connecting the filter part way along a hose so it lies on the ground, gets dragged, kinked, stood on and eventually cracked at a fitting. Mount it at the tap end where it is supported by the tap itself and where the joints are not under load. If the filter must sit at the far end, for instance to protect a specific appliance, support it on something rather than leaving it hanging. Keep it out of direct sun, since ultraviolet embrittles plastic bodies over a season.
Expect a pressure drop and plan for it
Every cartridge restricts flow, and a small one at hose flow rates restricts noticeably. That is tolerable when filling a tank and irritating when running a sprinkler. If flow matters, choose a body that takes a larger standard cartridge rather than the smallest sealed inline unit, and choose a coarser rating: a fine cartridge on a garden line blocks quickly and delivers little benefit. If the flow drops sharply during use, the cartridge is loading and is due for replacement or cleaning.
Match the cartridge to the actual job
For filling tanks, protecting a pressure washer or feeding drip irrigation with fine emitters, a sediment cartridge is the right choice and does the job well. For watering plants or filling a pond on a chlorinated supply, a carbon cartridge helps with free chlorine, though contact time at hose flow is short and chloramine will largely pass.
