Plastic filter housings: sizes, ratings and safe installation

Plastic filter housings come in a small number of standard sizes and a wide range of quality. The two dimensions that matter are length, normally ten or twenty inches, and diameter, either standard or the wide format usually called big blue. Everything else about choosing one comes down to port size, pressure rating and where you mount it.

Sizes and ports

The standard housing takes a cartridge about two and a half inches in diameter; the wide big blue format takes one about four and a half inches. Both come in ten inch and twenty inch lengths. Bigger is not vanity: a wide housing holds far more dirt at the same micron rating, drops less pressure at the same flow, and stretches the interval between changes, which is why whole-house installs default to it. Port threads are sold in several sizes, and the port should match the pipe it interrupts. Fitting a three quarter inch housing into a one inch main creates a permanent restriction that shows up as weak flow when two fixtures run together.

Clear or opaque, and where you put it

A clear sump lets you see the cartridge, which is genuinely useful on sediment stages where the load is visible. The cost is light: clear plastic passes daylight, daylight grows algae, and a sump in a sunny garage or on an exterior wall will go green. Opaque blue or black sumps are the right answer anywhere light reaches. Mount the housing on its bracket, screwed to something solid, with the head at a height where you can swing a wrench and drop the sump without lying on the floor. Leave a hand's width of clearance below for the sump to come off, and put a bucket-sized gap under it, because the sump comes off full.

Pressure, temperature and the failure modes

Housings carry a maximum working pressure and a maximum temperature, and both are real limits. Hot water backfeeding into a cold-line housing, which happens with a failed mixing valve or a crossed connection, softens and deforms plastic that was never rated for it. Pressure spikes from a fast-closing valve or a water hammer event are the other killer, and a spike is momentary enough that nobody connects it to the crack found weeks later. Overtightening is the third, and it is the most common: the o-ring seals, not the torque, so hand tight plus a nudge with the wrench is enough. A housing installed without a bracket, hanging on its plumbing, fails at the ports.

Materials, certification and seals

Look for housings made from materials certified for potable water contact, which manufacturers state alongside the pressure and temperature ratings on their product pages. Reinforced polypropylene sumps are the norm and hold up well; very cheap unbranded housings are where cracked sumps and weeping threads come from. The single o-ring between head and sump does all the sealing, so keep spares, seat it clean and dry in its groove, and use silicone grease rated for drinking water rather than petroleum jelly. Fit a pressure relief button if the head offers one, since it makes changing a cartridge a dry job instead of a wet one.
