Almost every household filter housing is rated for cold water service, and putting one on a hot line is a failure waiting to happen: the plastic softens, the seal relaxes, and the housing distorts or splits under pressure. A high temperature filter is one built for that duty, and the situations that genuinely require one are narrower than people expect.
What changes at temperature
Three things. The housing material loses strength as it warms, so the pressure it can safely hold falls, and a rating quoted at cold water temperature does not apply. The seal material matters, since standard o-rings harden or take a set at temperature and then leak on the next thermal cycle. And the media itself behaves differently: some cartridge binders soften, and carbon's adsorption capacity drops as water gets warmer, which is why a carbon filter on a hot line performs worse than the same cartridge on a cold one.
Where it is genuinely needed
Point of use filtration on a hot feed, which is unusual in homes. Recirculating hot water loops in larger properties, where a filter protects pumps and valves. Some appliance and equipment supplies that run hot. And a few commercial applications such as coffee and steam equipment. In a normal house, the sensible arrangement is to filter the cold supply upstream of the water heater, so everything downstream including the hot side receives already treated water and no hot rated housing is needed at all.
What to look for
A stated maximum operating temperature and a pressure rating quoted at that temperature, not at ambient. Stainless housings handle heat comfortably and are the usual answer, though some engineered polymers are rated for it. Seals specified for the temperature range, and spares available. Cartridges rated for hot service, since fitting a standard element inside a hot rated housing simply moves the failure. And check whether the manufacturer's rating covers continuous service or only intermittent, which are different numbers.
The alternative that usually wins
Treat the cold line before the water heater. Sediment, carbon and softening all work better at cold temperature, the housings are cheaper, the cartridges are cheaper, and the hot water is treated by consequence rather than by a second installation. The exception is a specific hot side problem such as scale in a recirculating loop, where a filter or scale control device on the hot side is doing a job the cold side cannot.
