What the housing has to survive

Then consider temperature: metal housings are commonly rated for hot lines that would soften a plastic sump. Then light, because ultraviolet exposure makes plastic brittle over years in a sunlit utility room or an outdoor enclosure, and a brittle housing fails suddenly rather than gradually. Finally consider how often it will be opened, since plastic threads craze with repeated handling while metal ones do not.

Sanitizing and well water

Metal takes chlorine sanitizing solutions that attack some plastics, which matters where the housing has to be disinfected as part of a routine rather than merely rinsed. That is common on private wells, which are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so the owner alone is responsible for keeping the system clean and for shocking it after any work on the well. A housing that can be scrubbed and chemically sanitized without crazing is a practical advantage in that setting, particularly where the treatment train lives in an unheated pit house rather than a conditioned basement.

Cartridge fit, gaskets and spares

Housings are sized by the cartridge they take, and mixing brands is where people come unstuck. Check the cartridge diameter and length, the end configuration, whether it needs a double open end or a specific cap, and the port thread size. Order a spare O-ring or gasket with the housing itself, because a weeping seal on a Sunday is an annoying way to discover the size is unusual. Lubricate the seal with a food-grade silicone grease at each change and never with petroleum products. Keep the correct sump wrench with the housing rather than in a drawer somewhere.

Mounting and monitoring

A stainless housing full of water is heavy, so it goes on a bracket screwed into studs, not into drywall, with the pipework supported so the housing is not carrying the plumbing. Leave clearance underneath equal to the full cartridge length so you can drop the sump without dismantling the line, and fit isolation valves either side plus a pressure relief button.
