Most household filter housings are moulded plastic and are entirely adequate for a cold water line inside a cabinet. A stainless housing costs considerably more and is the right answer in a narrower set of cases: high pressure, elevated temperature, ultraviolet exposure, or a location where a split housing would flood something expensive. Knowing which case you are in stops the upgrade being decoration.
What the metal actually buys you
Three things, in order of how often they matter. Pressure rating: a stainless vessel tolerates higher working pressure and, more importantly, survives the pressure spikes that crack a tired plastic bowl. Temperature: plastic housings are rated for cold lines and deform on a hot feed, while stainless is at home there, which is why hot water and point of entry industrial applications use it. Ultraviolet resistance: a housing in a garage window, an outbuilding or an exposed pump house is being slowly embrittled by sunlight, and metal is not.
Where plastic is the better engineering choice
Clear plastic sumps let you see the cartridge without opening anything, which is genuinely useful for judging sediment loading and spotting a channelled element. They cost a fraction as much, weigh little, and are easier to open with a strap wrench in a cramped cabinet. On an ordinary cold water line at household pressure, indoors, a good plastic housing changed on schedule will outlast the plumbing around it. Buying stainless for that duty spends money on a problem you do not have, and the money is better placed in a larger diameter housing or better media.
What to check before ordering
Cartridge size first: standard ten inch and twenty inch elements come in two common diameters, and a housing that does not match the cartridge you intend to keep buying is a lifetime nuisance. Port size and thread type next, because a housing with ports narrower than the pipe throttles the whole house at peak draw. Then the seal: a large o-ring in a clean groove is what holds pressure, so confirm spares are available and buy two. Finally, mounting, since a filled stainless housing is heavy and needs a proper bracket rather than the pipe taking the weight.
Fitting and living with it
Install with a bypass or at least isolation valves either side, so cartridge changes do not mean draining the house, and leave clearance below the bowl equal to its own height or you will not get the sump off. Support the housing on its bracket and let the pipework meet it without strain. At every change, wipe the o-ring groove clean, lubricate the seal with silicone grease rated for potable water, and hand tighten before the wrench.
