On an exposed well head, a workshop line, a hot loop or a system that gets sanitized regularly, the steel housing is the one that will still be sound at the tenth cartridge change. Keep the wrench and a spare o-ring set for either type.
Fittings, cartridges and mounting
Confirm the port size and thread standard, the cartridge length the sump takes and the end-cap style before ordering, since a stainless body does not make an incompatible cartridge fit. Steel housings are heavier, so mount to a bracket fixed into structure rather than into drywall, and support the pipework so the housing is not carrying it.
