Most under sink filters are sized for a dedicated drinking water tap, where a trickle is acceptable. A high flow unit is for a different arrangement: filtering everything that comes out of the existing cold tap, so the filter has to keep up with filling pans, washing up and rinsing, without the household noticing it is there.
What actually determines flow
Three things. Cartridge diameter and length, because a larger element presents more surface and restricts less. Media type, since a dense fine carbon block restricts far more than granular media or a coarser block at the same size. And port and tubing size, which is where a good cartridge is often wasted: a large filter fed through narrow tubing and small fittings is throttled by the plumbing rather than by the media. Look at all three rather than at the flow figure alone, and be sceptical of ratings quoted at pressures higher than your house has.
The trade you are making
Flow and contact time pull against each other. Water moving quickly through carbon spends less time in contact with it, and contact time is what adsorption depends on, so a high flow unit generally reduces chlorine and taste well and is a weaker performer on anything demanding, chloramine especially. Fine mechanical claims also cost flow, since particle capture requires a tight structure. A high flow filter is therefore the right choice for whole tap convenience and the wrong one where a specific contaminant reduction is the goal.
Two arrangements, and which suits
Whole tap filtration puts the cartridge on the cold feed so everything from the existing tap is treated. It is convenient and it consumes the cartridge faster, because water that fills a washing up bowl is being filtered too. A dedicated faucet takes filtered water to its own small tap, so a smaller cartridge lasts far longer and the flow requirement is low. If the household mainly wants better drinking water, the dedicated faucet is more efficient. If it wants everything from the tap treated without thinking about it, high flow is the way.
Fitting it so the flow survives
Use the largest tubing and fittings the system supports, keep the run short and the bends gentle, and avoid stacking multiple stages unless each one is needed, since every housing adds restriction. Fit isolation valves so cartridge changes are quick, and leave clearance below the housing to pull the element down. Change on the manufacturer's rated volume, remembering that a whole tap arrangement reaches that volume much sooner than a dedicated faucet.
