Fine mechanical filtration and whole house flow rates pull hard against each other, and the exposure that matters is what people drink. Both of those point to the same conclusion, and it is not the one product pages usually push.
Why point of use is the practical answer
Capturing small particles requires a tight structure, and a tight structure restricts flow. At a kitchen tap that is barely noticeable. Applied to the whole house, where a shower and a washing machine may run together, it means either a very large and expensive installation or a household at poor pressure. Since ingestion is the exposure route people are concerned about, treating drinking and cooking water at one tap addresses the concern for a fraction of the cost, which is why point of use is the sensible default.
What to fit there
Two options do the job well. A carbon block with a fine absolute rating filters mechanically as well as adsorbing, so it addresses taste and particles together in a single under sink cartridge. Reverse osmosis is the more complete choice, since the membrane excludes particles of this scale comfortably along with dissolved contaminants, at the cost of a drain connection and a tank. Ultrafiltration sits between them and needs no drain. What does not work reliably is a coarse sediment cartridge or a pitcher not built for particulate capture.
Where the particles come from
Sources include the breakdown of larger plastic items, fibres shed from synthetic textiles in laundry, and material entering supplies through the environment rather than through a failure at a treatment plant. That matters for two reasons. First, it means the concentration in a supply is not something a utility report will usually quantify for you. Second, it means household plumbing and storage can contribute, so a very fine filter at the point of use is capturing whatever the whole path delivered rather than only what left the treatment works.
Staging so the fine filter survives
A fine cartridge on water carrying ordinary sediment will exhaust quickly, so if the supply is at all gritty, put a coarser stage in front of it. That is true whether the fine stage is a carbon block or a membrane, and it is the same protective logic every prefilter follows. Change the fine element on its rated volume rather than on flow, since a loaded mechanical filter can release captured material if disturbed.
