Microplastics are a size category covering fragments and fibers of many different plastics, not a single contaminant with its own certification, so the honest way to shop is to compare particle ratings and technologies rather than claims on a box.

Why there is no simple certification to look for

Household filters are commonly certified against specific named contaminants and against particle classes such as cysts. Microplastics do not fit that model, because the term describes a range of particle sizes made of many different polymers rather than one substance with one test method. That means a product cannot honestly be certified to remove microplastics the way it can be certified to reduce lead. Reverse osmosis is tighter still and rejects dissolved contaminants as well, at the cost of a drain line and a storage tank. Loose pleated sediment cartridges and most gravity pitchers are built for coarser work and should not be expected to do this job.

Where to put it, and what your utility report will not tell you

Fit the fine filter where the water is drunk and cooked with, since that is where the exposure is concentrated and where a small, frequently replaced element is affordable. Whole-house sediment filtration reduces the general particle load and protects appliances, but running every gallon in the house through a fine absolute element is expensive and will restrict flow. Do not expect your utility's report to settle the question either: the EPA requires every community water system to publish an annual Consumer Confidence Report on the contaminants it regulates, and microplastics are not among them, so a clean report is silent on plastic particles rather than reassuring about them.

Practical buying and maintenance

Shortlist on the absolute particle rating, then check what independent certification the product holds for its other claims, since a maker willing to certify chlorine and lead reduction is generally more careful about the numbers it publishes overall. Does a standard filter pitcher remove microplastics?

Most pitchers are built around loose carbon for taste and odor and do not publish a fine absolute particle rating, so they should not be assumed to. Check the specification for a stated particle size before relying on one for this purpose.

Do I need reverse osmosis, or is ultrafiltration enough?

For particles alone, an ultrafiltration membrane or a fine absolute carbon block is sufficient and keeps minerals in the water. Reverse osmosis becomes the better choice when you also need to address dissolved contaminants such as nitrate or PFAS.

Does boiling water deal with microplastics?
