Microplastics reach tap water by several routes and leave it by only a few. Understanding the routes explains why household filtration is aimed where it is, and why a utility report will not usually give you a number to work from. It also explains why the plumbing between the treatment works and your glass is part of the question rather than a neutral pipe.
Where the particles come from
Sources include the physical breakdown of larger plastic items in the environment, fibres shed from synthetic textiles during laundry, and material entering catchments through run off and the atmosphere. Conventional treatment processes at a water works remove a large proportion of what arrives, particularly the larger particles, through the same coagulation and filtration steps that remove other suspended material. What passes through does so because it is small, and small is exactly what makes it difficult at the household end too.
The household path adds its own
Between the treatment works and the tap, water passes through distribution mains, a service line, household plumbing and any storage. Plastic pipework, fittings, seals and kettles all contribute in small ways, and bottled water is not an escape: several studies have found particle counts in bottled water that make it a poor substitute for treating tap water. That is one reason a fine filter at the point of use is aimed usefully: it captures whatever the entire path delivered rather than only what left the works.
Why the numbers are hard to come by
The EPA notes that every community water system publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report and maintains a finder for them, and those reports cover the parameters systems are required to monitor. Microplastics are not among the routinely reported ones, and measurement methods are still being standardised, so most households are making a precautionary decision rather than responding to a figure. That is a legitimate basis for fitting a filter; it just means the decision is about risk tolerance rather than a threshold.
What actually captures them
Capture is mechanical, so what matters is the filter's pore rating and whether that rating is absolute rather than nominal. A fine absolute rated carbon block, an ultrafiltration membrane and reverse osmosis all do the job at the point of use. Coarse sediment cartridges and pitcher filters not built for particulate work do not reliably.
