Acidic well water has a pH below neutral, and its damage shows up in the plumbing long before anyone tastes it. The classic signs are blue-green staining in sinks and tubs where the water is dissolving copper out of the pipes, and pinhole leaks in copper lines that are otherwise not old enough to fail. Left alone it slowly eats the plumbing it runs through.
Reading the signs before the test
Blue or green staining below a faucet or around a tub drain is copper in solution, which means the water is aggressive enough to attack the pipe wall. Rusty stains from steel fittings, a metallic taste and repeated pinhole leaks in copper point the same way. Acidic water can also strip protective scale from the water heater and shorten the life of the anode rod. None of this is proof on its own, but together it is a strong case for testing pH.
Nobody tests your well but you
The EPA is clear that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and around 15 percent of the US population, over 43 million people in more than 23 million households, rely on them. No utility samples that water and no report arrives in the post. The EPA also notes a USGS study of 2,100 private wells in which about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. Testing is the owner's job, and pH belongs on the panel.
Neutralizing filters and soda ash feeds
The common correction is a neutralizing filter: a tank of calcite, sometimes blended with a magnesium medium, which the water dissolves slowly as it passes, raising pH and adding a little hardness in the process. The media is topped up periodically and the tank backwashes to prevent packing. Where the water is very acidic or flow is high, a soda ash feed pump doses solution into the line instead, which raises pH without adding hardness but needs the solution mixed and the pump maintained.
Order matters when you have several problems
Wells rarely have only one fault. Raising pH first often makes downstream treatment work better, because iron oxidizes more readily above neutral and softener resin performs within a pH range. Get pH, hardness, iron, manganese and bacteria on one panel so the whole train can be designed at once, rather than bolting on tanks in whatever order the symptoms surfaced. Is acidic well water safe to drink?
Low pH itself is an aesthetic issue, but it dissolves metals from pipes and fittings, and those metals are the real concern to test for.
Will a softener raise the pH?
No. Ion exchange trades hardness for sodium and leaves pH essentially unchanged, so a neutralizer or a chemical feed is needed.
How often should a neutralizing filter be topped up?
It depends on how acidic the water is and how much you use, so check the media level regularly and retest pH after each refill.
