A well water acid neutralizer is a backwashing tank of alkaline media that raises the pH of acidic well water before it reaches your plumbing. Acidic water dissolves metal from pipes and fittings, which is why the first symptoms are usually blue-green staining in sinks and, in time, pinhole leaks in copper.

Why acidic well water damages plumbing

Groundwater picks up its character from the rock it travels through. Wells in granite and sandstone country, and shallow wells fed by rainfall through leaf litter, often deliver water on the acidic side. That water is aggressive toward metal: it slowly takes copper into solution from supply lines, which is what tints a shower base or a white sink basin blue-green, and it takes lead and other metals from older solder and brass fittings. Because private wells are not regulated under the federal Safe Drinking Water Act, nobody tests or corrects this for you, so the first evidence a household gets is usually the staining or a leak in a soldered joint.

What is inside the tank

The standard neutralizer is a fiberglass tank with a control valve on top, filled with calcite, which is crushed calcium carbonate. Acidic water flowing down through the bed dissolves a little of the media, and that consumes acidity and lifts pH. Where the water is strongly acidic, a blend that includes magnesium oxide is used because it is more reactive and can reach a higher pH than calcite alone. Since the media is consumed by doing its job, the bed slowly shrinks and has to be topped up, typically once or twice a year depending on how acidic the water is and how much the household uses.

It will make your water harder

This surprises people. The neutralizer works by dissolving calcium into the water, and hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium, so treating acidity necessarily adds hardness. A house that was on soft acidic water may find itself with scale on the kettle and spotting on glassware after the neutralizer goes in. That is not a fault, it is the mechanism. The usual arrangement on a well is neutralizer first, then a softener downstream to take out the hardness the neutralizer added, with any iron treatment sized and placed according to the iron form present.

Sizing, order and service

Size the tank on the house's peak flow, not on the number of people, because the media needs contact time with the water and a tank starved of contact time will under-treat during a shower and a washing machine running together. The valve backwashes on a timer to lift and re-level the bed, which prevents channeling and stops the fine particles compacting, so the tank needs a drain and a nearby outlet.
