A calcite neutralizer is a backwashing tank of crushed calcium carbonate that acidic water dissolves as it passes through, raising the pH. It is the standard answer to low pH on a private well, and it is a consumable rather than a filter: the media is used up by doing its job, so the tank needs topping up on a schedule rather than being left alone.
Recognizing the problem it solves
Acidic water is aggressive to metal, and it advertises itself before it is measured. Blue green staining in sinks, baths and toilet cisterns is dissolved copper coming out of your own pipework. Pinhole leaks in copper lines, often several appearing within a short period, are the same process finishing. A metallic taste, and corroded fittings on a heater, point the same way. The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so nobody is monitoring this on your behalf and the staining is often the first notice you get.
How the tank actually works
Water enters the top of the vessel and flows down through a bed of calcite chips. Acidic water dissolves a small amount of the calcium carbonate as it goes, consuming acidity and lifting the pH towards neutral. A control head backwashes the bed periodically, which lifts and reclassifies the media so it does not cement into a solid mass and channel. Contact time governs the result, so the tank must be sized to the household flow rather than to its footprint, and a bed that is too small for the flow lifts pH by very little.
The trade you are making
The calcium dissolved into the water is hardness, and it is added deliberately. On water that was already hard, a neutralizer makes it harder, and if scale was a complaint it will get worse. That is not a reason to avoid the treatment, since corroding pipework is much the more expensive problem, but it does mean the plan usually reads neutralizer first and softener after it, in that order, with the softener sized for the raised hardness rather than the original figure. Where the pH is very low, a soda ash injection system adds no hardness and is the alternative.
Keeping it working
The media is consumed, so the bed level falls and the tank is topped up, typically once or twice a year depending on how acidic the water is and how much is used. Running it low is the common failure: the pH quietly drifts back down and the corrosion resumes with nothing visibly wrong at the tank. Some beds also cement despite backwashing and need breaking up or replacing. Corosex is often blended in for very acidic water, since it acts faster than calcite but overshoots easily on its own.
