A calcite water neutralizer is a tank of crushed calcium carbonate that acidic water dissolves as it passes through, raising the pH and stopping the corrosion that eats copper pipe. It is the standard fix for a well that is leaving blue green stains in the sink and pinholes in the plumbing.
What the media actually does
Calcite is a natural calcium carbonate media, essentially crushed limestone or marble. Acidic water is aggressive and dissolves it slowly, and that dissolution consumes the acidity and lifts the pH toward neutral. Because the reaction is a dissolving one, the media is consumed rather than exhausted: the bed level in the tank drops over time and has to be topped up. Where the water is very aggressive, calcite alone can be slow, and a blended media containing magnesium oxide is used to push the pH higher in the same contact time. That blend acts faster and is consumed faster.
Signs you need one
Acidic water rarely announces itself with a taste. What you see is blue green staining in tubs, sinks and around fixtures where copper is dissolving, rust colored stains where steel is, and eventually pinhole leaks in copper lines. Faucet cartridges and heating element failures come earlier than they should. It raises hardness, and that changes the rest of the system
There is a trade off worth understanding before you buy. The neutralizer works by putting calcium into the water, so treated water is harder than the water going in. If you already run a softener, the softener sees the new hardness and will consume more salt and regenerate more often. Order matters: put the neutralizer first and the softener after it, so the softener removes the calcium the neutralizer just added. If you have no softener and the raw water was already borderline hard, expect more scale on kettles and showerheads after the neutralizer goes in.
Backwashing, sizing and upkeep
Most residential neutralizers are backwashing tanks with a control valve. Backwashing lifts and rinses the bed, which stops the fine particles cementing into a solid mass and keeps the water flowing evenly through the media rather than channeling down one path. That means the tank needs a drain and a power outlet. Size the tank for contact time at the peak flow of the house, not the average, since water that races through barely changes pH. Plan on opening the tank to add media periodically, and check pH downstream after each top up so you know the bed is still doing its job.
Alternatives when calcite is not enough
Where the water is extremely acidic or the flow is high, a soda ash injection system is used instead: a chemical feed pump doses sodium carbonate solution into the line, which raises pH without adding hardness and without a contact tank of media. It costs more attention, since the solution tank has to be mixed and refilled, and it adds sodium to the water. The choice usually comes down to how far the pH has to move and whether the household wants a tank to top up or a solution to mix. Test first, then choose, because both are sized from the measured pH.
Questions people ask about calcite water neutralizer
How often does calcite media need topping up?
It depends on how acidic the water is and how much the house uses, since the media dissolves as it works. Watch the bed level and the treated pH rather than a fixed calendar date.
Does a calcite neutralizer remove anything from the water?
No. It corrects pH by adding dissolved calcium, and it does not remove iron, bacteria, sediment or chemical contaminants. Those need their own stage in the treatment train.
Should the neutralizer go before or after the softener?
Before. The neutralizer adds hardness to the water, so placing the softener downstream lets it strip that hardness back out again.
Can I use a calcite cartridge instead of a tank?
Cartridge versions exist but hold very little media, so they suit a single fixture or a very small flow. A whole house on acidic well water needs a proper backwashing tank for contact time.
