Low pH water is not usually a health problem in itself and is very much a plumbing problem. Acidic water is corrosive to the metals it touches, dissolving copper from pipe and metals from brass fittings, and the damage accumulates quietly for years before announcing itself as a leak. The signs are recognisable and the correction is well established.
The signs, in the order they appear
Blue green staining in basins, baths and around fittings comes first, and it is dissolved copper depositing as water evaporates. A metallic or bitter taste follows, most noticeable first thing in the morning when water has stood in the pipes overnight. Then pinhole leaks in copper pipework, often several within a short period, which is the expensive stage. Soft, low mineral water from shallow wells in granite country is the classic case, and rainwater harvesting systems produce naturally aggressive water for the same reason.
Test alkalinity as well as pH
pH tells you where the water sits now; alkalinity tells you how strongly it resists change. Water with low alkalinity swings easily, which means treatment has to be more carefully controlled and that the pH reading itself is less stable between samples. Testing both together is what allows a system to be specified properly rather than by trial. It is also worth testing for copper at the same time, since that quantifies what the water is already taking out of the plumbing.
Calcite neutralizer or soda ash
A calcite neutralizer is a backwashing vessel of calcium carbonate media that dissolves into the acidic water, raising pH with no chemicals or pump. It is simple, and it adds hardness as it works and has a limited lift, so strongly acidic water may not reach the target. Soda ash injection doses a solution through a metering pump, giving precise control and a greater lift while adding sodium rather than hardness, at the cost of a tank to refill and a pump to maintain.
Where correction sits, and what to do meanwhile
pH correction goes early in the treatment train, ahead of iron and manganese treatment which are pH sensitive, and ahead of everything the corrosive water would otherwise attack. Until it is fitted, run a tap until the water is cold before drinking or cooking and never use hot water for either, since standing and hot water both dissolve more metal.
