VOCs in water: where they come from and how to find them

VOCs in water are volatile organic compounds: carbon-based chemicals that evaporate readily and dissolve into groundwater from fuel, solvents and industrial residues. Some are also created inside the treatment process itself. At the levels that matter most are invisible and tasteless, so finding them is a laboratory job rather than a kitchen one.

Where they come from

Three routes account for most household exposure. Leaking underground fuel storage, spills and old industrial sites put benzene, toluene and fuel oxygenates into groundwater. Solvents such as trichloroethylene and perchloroethylene come from degreasing and dry cleaning operations and travel a long way in an aquifer. And trihalomethanes form in treated municipal water when chlorine reacts with the natural organic matter already in the source water.

Why they are hard to notice

A few produce a solvent or petroleum smell at higher concentrations, which is worth acting on immediately, but many are odorless and tasteless at the levels regulators care about. Because they evaporate, exposure is not only through drinking: a hot shower moves volatile compounds into the air of the bathroom, which is the argument for whole-house treatment when a report confirms them rather than a filter at the kitchen tap alone.

Testing is the only way to know

Every community water system publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report and the EPA maintains a finder for it, so a municipal household should read that first: regulated organics appear there with the levels measured. On a private well nobody is looking on your behalf, because the EPA is explicit that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act. A volatile organics panel is ordered separately from the usual bacteria and nitrate test, and it is worth ordering if you live near fuel storage, a landfill or a known industrial site.

Removal, and how to size it

Activated carbon is the practical household answer, in a solid block at the point of use or a properly sized carbon bed for the whole house. Contact time governs performance, so a large bed on a fast line is not the same thing as a big cartridge. Aeration is used where concentrations are high, stripping the compounds out before treatment. Whichever route you take, retest after installation and again on a schedule, because carbon exhausts silently and gives no taste warning when it does.
