Parasites in water: how they get in and how to remove them

The parasites that matter in household water are microscopic protozoa, mainly Giardia and Cryptosporidium, which live in the gut of animals and people and spread through fecal contamination of a water source. They are not visible, they do not change the taste, and the only way to know they are there is a laboratory test. Removing them is a different job from removing chemicals, because they are particles with a hard outer shell rather than dissolved substances.

How they reach a household supply

Protozoan cysts and oocysts get into water when surface runoff carrying animal or human waste reaches the source. On a private well that usually means a shallow or poorly sealed well, a cracked casing, a missing or damaged well cap, flooding over the wellhead, or a septic field or livestock yard too close to the bore. Wells drawing from fractured rock or from an aquifer under the direct influence of surface water are the most exposed. The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act and that a USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark, which is why testing a well is the owner's own responsibility.

Why chlorine alone is not the answer

Chlorine handles most bacteria efficiently, but Cryptosporidium oocysts are notably resistant to it at the concentrations and contact times used in household disinfection. That is the practical reason municipal systems layer filtration and, increasingly, ultraviolet treatment on top of chlorination rather than relying on chemistry alone. If you have shocked a well and are relying on the residual to protect you from parasites, you are relying on the wrong barrier. Shock chlorination is a way to clean up a contaminated well and its plumbing after a repair or a flood, not an ongoing treatment for cysts.

What actually removes or inactivates them

Three barriers work, and each has a different failure mode. A filter with an absolute micron rating fine enough to be cyst-rated physically strains the organisms out, and the word absolute matters because a nominal rating lets a fraction through. Reverse osmosis removes them at the membrane, though only for the water that goes through the dedicated faucet. Ultraviolet treatment does not remove anything, it damages the organism's DNA so it cannot infect, and it needs clear water and a working lamp to deliver the dose. Boiling water at a rolling boil remains the reliable emergency measure while a supply is in doubt.

Test first, then choose the barrier

A parasite scare is the one case where guessing is expensive, because the equipment that stops cysts is not the equipment that fixes taste, hardness or iron. Have the water tested by a certified laboratory for total coliform and E. coli as the routine indicator of fecal contamination, and ask about specific protozoan testing if there has been flooding, a septic failure or an illness in the household. Questions people ask about parasites in water

Do parasites in water change the taste or smell?

No. Giardia and Cryptosporidium give no taste, odor or color, so a clear glass of water tells you nothing. Only a laboratory test can confirm or rule them out.

Will a standard carbon pitcher filter remove parasites?

Not unless it carries a cyst rating. Ordinary carbon pitchers are made for taste and chlorine, and a nominal rating is not a barrier you should rely on for cysts.

Does a UV system remove parasites from the water?

It inactivates them rather than removing them. The organisms stay in the water but can no longer infect, provided the water is clear enough for the light to reach them.

Is a positive coliform test proof of parasites?

No, but it is a warning that surface contamination is reaching your supply, which is the same pathway parasites use. It justifies finding and sealing the entry point.
