Water softener filtration: what ion exchange really does

Water softener filtration is a phrase that hides a genuine confusion, because a softener does not filter anything in the normal sense. It exchanges dissolved calcium and magnesium for sodium on a resin bed and regenerates with brine, so it changes the chemistry of the water while removing none of the particles, chemicals or organisms a filter would catch.

How ion exchange differs from filtration

A filter is a physical or adsorptive barrier: particles are trapped in a matrix, or molecules stick to carbon. Ion exchange is a swap. Resin beads carry sodium ions loosely, calcium and magnesium bind more strongly, so as water passes through the bed the hardness minerals attach and sodium is released. When the bed is loaded, a strong brine reverses the exchange and the hardness goes to drain. Nothing is strained out, which is why softened water can still be cloudy, chlorinated or unsafe.

What a softener does incidentally remove

Because ion exchange grabs positively charged ions, a softener also picks up some dissolved iron and manganese, which is why lightly ferrous wells sometimes stay clean with a softener alone. Penn State Extension sets out the narrow window where this works: pH above 6.7, hardness of 3 to 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron under 5 mg/L, with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L iron and 0.05 mg/L manganese as secondary aesthetic standards. Outside that window the iron oxidizes and fouls the resin instead.

What it definitely does not touch

Chlorine and chloramine taste, sediment and grit, bacteria and viruses, lead, nitrate, PFAS, pesticides and volatile organic chemicals all pass through a softener unchanged. Worse, free chlorine slowly degrades the resin itself, which is one argument for carbon ahead of the softener on a chlorinated supply. If your complaint is taste, safety or clarity rather than scale and soap performance, the softener is not the product that answers it.

The filtration stages that belong around it

Upstream, a sediment filter keeps grit out of the control valve and the bed, and on well water an iron or sulfur filter keeps oxidized metal off the resin. On city water, catalytic carbon ahead of the softener protects the resin from chlorine and chloramine. So do you need filtration as well as softening?

Almost always, but the amount depends entirely on the test. A city supply with hard water and a chlorine taste needs a softener and a carbon stage, and that may be the whole project. A well with iron, sulfur odor and a coliform history needs a train, and the softener is only one box in it. Deciding on symptoms alone leads to buying a softener for a taste problem, which is the most common wasted purchase in residential water treatment.

Does a water softener filter out chlorine?

No, and chlorine gradually degrades the resin. A carbon stage ahead of the softener removes the chlorine and extends the life of the resin bed at the same time.

Will a softener remove iron from well water?

Only dissolved iron, and only within narrow conditions: Penn State Extension cites pH above 6.7, hardness of 3 to 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron under 5 mg/L. Oxidized iron fouls the resin and must be filtered first.

Is softened water filtered water?

No. Softening changes the mineral chemistry and removes no particles, chemicals or organisms. Clarity and safety are separate questions answered by filtration and disinfection.

Do I need a sediment filter before a softener?

On any supply carrying grit, yes. Sand and rust score the control valve seals and lodge in the resin bed, and a cheap cartridge upstream is far less costly than a rebuilt valve.
