Water filtration and softener equipment do two different jobs and most homes that need one end up needing both. Filtration removes things that are in the water as particles or as chemicals: sediment, chlorine, iron, taste and odor. Softening removes dissolved calcium and magnesium by ion exchange. Put them in the wrong order and the filter loads up early or the softener resin is destroyed, so sequence is the decision that matters.
The two jobs, kept separate
The USGS classes water as soft at 0 to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate, moderately hard at 61 to 120, hard at 121 to 180 and very hard above 180 mg/L, and that number is what a softener changes. Nothing a carbon filter does moves it. In the other direction, a softener does not remove chlorine, it does not remove sediment, it does not improve taste and it does not touch most dissolved contaminants. Households buy one and are disappointed that it did not fix the other complaint, then buy the second unit anyway. Deciding both at once is cheaper, because the plumbing is opened once and the units can be sized as a system.
The order the stages go in
Sediment comes first, always, because grit shortens the life of everything downstream and it is the cheapest thing to replace. Carbon goes next on chlorinated city water, and it goes ahead of the softener rather than behind it, because chlorine attacks softener resin and shortens the bed's working life considerably. On a well, an oxidizing iron filter takes the carbon's place in that position, since oxidized iron fouls softener resin and no amount of salt recovers the capacity. The softener sits last in the whole-house train, and any point-of-use reverse osmosis unit sits after all of it, benefitting from softened, dechlorinated feed water.
What the installation needs on site
Plan for the physical requirements before choosing hardware. Each tank needs floor space with clearance above it to pull the valve or change the media, the softener needs a drain with an air gap and a power outlet, and the brine tank needs enough room beside it that a bag of salt can be tipped in without a fight. The whole assembly goes downstream of the main shutoff and upstream of the water heater, with the outside spigots and any irrigation branch taken off ahead of the softener so you are not softening the lawn. A bypass loop around the entire set is not optional; it is how you keep water on during service.
Combination units and when they make sense
Manufacturers sell single-tank units that layer carbon or a specialty medium on top of softening resin, and twin-tank cabinets that put both functions in one enclosure. They save space and simplify installation, which matters in a tight utility closet or a condo. The tradeoff is that the media are on the same regeneration schedule whether they need it or not, and when one layer fails you replace the whole bed. Should the filter go before or after the softener?
Before, in almost every case. Sediment and chlorine damage or clog softener resin, so the filtration stages protect the softener rather than the reverse.
Does a water softener filter anything out?
Only dissolved hardness minerals, by ion exchange. It does not remove sediment, chlorine, bacteria or most dissolved chemical contaminants.
Can one unit do both filtration and softening?
