Water filtration and softener systems are often sold together, but they solve different problems and the order they sit in on your main line matters more than the brands. A softener removes hardness and nothing else; filtration removes everything else and does nothing for hardness. Put them in the wrong sequence and you will pay for the mistake in ruined media.
Two different jobs, two different machines
A softener is an ion exchange device: hardness minerals are swapped for sodium on a resin bed and the resin is periodically rinsed clean with brine. The USGS defines hardness as dissolved calcium and magnesium, classing water as soft up to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate, moderately hard from 61 to 120, hard from 121 to 180 and very hard above 180. Filtration is a different mechanism entirely: sediment cartridges strain particles, carbon adsorbs chlorine and organics, and oxidizing beds convert dissolved metals into solids they can then trap. Neither machine substitutes for the other.
The order on the main line
Water should meet the equipment that protects the next stage first. Sediment filtration goes at the head of the chain, because grit damages everything downstream. Iron and sulfur treatment goes next, because oxidized iron fouls softener resin and shortens its life dramatically. The softener follows. Carbon usually sits after the softener when the aim is taste and chlorine removal at the tap, though on municipal water many installers put carbon before the softener specifically to protect the resin from chlorine, which slowly degrades it. Both arrangements are defensible; the choice depends on which threat is larger in your water.
What a combination unit really is
Systems sold as filtration and softening in one are usually either two tanks on a shared valve or a single tank holding layered media. Two tanks are easier to service and let each stage backwash on its own schedule, which is the more reliable design. A single tank of blended media is compact and cheaper but compromises: media with different densities want different backwash rates, and one exhausting before the other means replacing the whole bed. For a household with one clear problem plus chlorine, a combination unit is fine; for well water with several problems, separate stages win.
Iron decides the design more than anything else
Penn State Extension notes that iron and manganese carry secondary, aesthetic standards, with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L iron and 0.05 mg/L manganese, and that a softener can remove dissolved iron when pH is above 6.7, hardness is 3 to 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron is under 5 mg/L. Outside those conditions, or where the iron has already oxidized, the softener will foul and needs dedicated iron treatment ahead of it. That single test result changes the whole design, which is why the lab report comes before the shopping.
Size the chain to the house, not the tank
Every stage in the chain drops some pressure, and the total is what your shower feels. Size each vessel to the peak flow the household actually draws, which depends on the number of simultaneous fixtures rather than on square footage, and count the service flow rating of each unit rather than its capacity.
